TITLE  Music in Memory of the 50s

PLAN - WHAT DID YOU SET OUT TO DO?
LL4S
  Summary/ Description of Activity
Concert in memory of Lill-Ingvar, who was a local celebrity of popular music in the 50’s. An orchestra consisting of seniors plays accordion and other kinds of music from the era when Lill-Ingvar’s band was the top orchestra on local dance events. A guest artist is invited every year. A big local event also used for presenting a scholarship to a promising young local musician playing in the Lill-Ingvar tradition. The event is filmed and later used as material for supporting remembrance in older seniors in nursing homes, where sing-along events are held.
  Learning objectives:
Brings back memories of the old days to people of the same generation and promotes the interest in younger generations who have only heard of the band and the cultural events of the youngsters of the 50’s. Lots of memories expected to be shared in the concert audiences as well as among the sing-along participants in the nursing homes, where also singing enhances well-being in a wider context, i.e. physical as singing involves many muscle groups that tend be inactive in a very quiet life. Dancing may occur as well!

EVALUATION OF ACTIVITY
  Evaluation of the Learning Objectives
The concerts as well as the sing-along activities in the nursing homes are very happy events when lots of memories are shared among the seniors and a lot of knowledge is passed on to younger generations.Singing works very well as means of supporting activity in older seniors’ daily life, which supports day-to-day learning processes also in dement people. Local interest enhances the recognition in people who may otherwise not remember a lot in a comprehensive way. Everyone young in the 50s in Vara has danced to Lill-Ingvar’s orchestra – lots to share with friends and staff.
  Evaluation of the activity
Big audiences at concerts make way for video films with much enthusiasm. Not only do the films contain the music and the seniors performing in the orchestra, and the news about who is to have the scholarship this year, but also pictures of local people attending the concert promotes very active participation among viewers.
Evaluation of what was learned by the participants
Picking up the old memories supported by the music. Further learning could probably take place in regular sing-along activities not only in nursing homes and forming of I-sing-rather-than-well choirs – if only musicians available.
Evaluation of what staff have learned
Important to have a good flow in ticket handling (done professionally by the Concert Hall). Space adequate for both musicians and dancers. All rights concerning the video uptake need to be considered. Sing-along in nursing homes in rooms with space enough for some enthusiastic singers and within hearing distance from the rest to spread the joy and the support for learning conversations on older times.
