TITLE  What’s in Your Linen Cupboard?

PLAN - WHAT DID YOU SET OUT TO DO?
LL4S
  Summary/ Description of Activity
Through an inventory of linen cupboards items no longer in use neither in everyday life or at special occasions are picked out and put on temporary display, raising awareness of the old techniques in textile handicraft and the use of the items. Residents of the nursing home, where the activity was held, were given the chance to pick things out of their private collections, access the exhibition place by themselves and display their treasures to others on equal terms. A mix of seniors living at the nursing home and those only paying a visit to the offered activities supports learning between two or more fairly close generations but also brings the outer world into the nursing home in a natural way.
  Learning objectives:
1)Raising awareness of a fading heritage and 2)promote learning of old techniques among especially younger people generally interested in handicraft or textile traditions. 3)Keeping methods of manufacturing as well as preserving local artefacts alive as people tend to take better care of things when they know more about them. 4)Learning is expected to take place between seniors while sharing knowledge of use, techniques and traditions connected to the items.

EVALUATION OF ACTIVITY
  Evaluation of the Learning Objectives
Everybody has been very pleased with the exhibition. Awareness of the value of stored items in private cupboards has risen substantially and many got very enthusiastic to learn the handicraft and to try making new things. Exchange of knowledge between participants worked very well.
  Evaluation of the activity
New visitors appeared every time to look at the new display. It’s possible this turns into an ongoing activity rather than closing at a certain date for as long as we see the interest.
Evaluation of what was learned by the participants
The raised awareness of values of old things led to an understanding of never throwing away old handicraft because of the risk of traditions easily disappearing and no one being able to teach the old techniques. Techniques were studied and learned from the exhibits. Lots of discussion took place between the participants.
Evaluation of what staff have learned
The word about the activity was easily spread from mouth to mouth. The longer the activity goes on, the more people attend. In the end, it’s a matter of how many can be hosted and involved before the group needs to be divided in two. Some of the items will be collected for a standing exhibition during the intermediate period between two occasions. Next time the objects will be changed and a new exhibition will be on display. This will support an ongoing learning process among participants, guests and nursing home staff. If possible move the exhibitions to Vara Library to make it accessible and noticed by a wider audience.Focus on younger people has not been prioritised so far.
